Revised naming convention for CRM updates

Starting with CRM 2015, Microsoft has changed the naming convention for CRM updates as described in this article,

In the past we've had Update Rollups, Service Packs and various names for updates to CRM Online.

It's all down to the version number. You can find the version number of your CRM build in the web client, by clicking the Settings icon at the top right and then clicking About. The version number has four parts, for example:

In an effort to unify the naming convention, the following applies:

  • The first number in the version is the major release. CRM 2015 is major release number 7, CRM 2013 is major release 6 and so on.
  • The second number is the minor release. For example, the Leo release for CRM 2013 was minor release 1, so the version number was In CRM 2013 On-premise whis was called a service pack. Only one service pack was released.
  • The third number is the minor incremental update. This is equivalent to Update Rollups in CRM on-premise.
  • The fourth number is the build. We need not be concerned with the build number, it is incremented each time the CRM developers make a change to CRM code.

Note that not all updates made available for CRM Online are released for CRM On-premise so you might see a gap in version numbers. For example, the Spring 2015 "Carina" release for CRM Online is not planned to be released for CRM On-premise. So the version numbering will as per the table, note the "Not Released" entries.

CRM 2015 arrived Online

It seems that CRM 2015 has arrived to the Online world. I created a new trial organisation and noted that it was the CRM Online 2015 Update, build

Update Rollup 2 for CRM 2013 Service Pack 1

Microsoft has provided pre-release information for Update Rollup 2 for CRM 2013 Service Pack 1 at which is due for release in Q4 of 2014.

This update rollup can only be applied if you have installed Service Pack 1 for CRM 2013.

In the issues that are resolved section (you need to expand the section), a long list of fixes is detailed, but the following caught my attention being bugs that I've experienced or seen others report:

  • When security roles are changed on a Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 form, the changes are not immediately being displayed.
  • When using Server Side sync and setting the option to track all email within personal options, received emails do not change the Track button, this causes the View in CRM buttons to not get enabled within the command bar.
  • When AutoSave is off in System Settings and a View is modified for an Entity in Customize this System an error is encountered: "Your changes have not been saved. To save you changes click cancel to stay on the page" This error occurs after changing the Edit Filter Criteria and selecting OK, then attempting to Add Columns.

The last item is one that has particularly bugged me - I'm looking forward to the fix.

Product Updates for CRM 2013 SP1 and CRM Online Spring 14

Service Pack 1 for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 and CRM Online Spring 14 introduces substantial enhancements to Service Management. However, the new features are disabled by default (unless you are a new subscriber to CRM Online). The new features are enabled in Settings > Administration > Install Product Updates.

Even if you don't install the updates you will see the new entities and attributes if you examine the default solution or the metadata.
